The majority of Brits travel abroad for their holidays. In 2019 the average Brit spent just under 10 days abroad and 72.6 million trips were taken abroad, primarily to Spain, France, and Italy. However, this year has (unsurprisingly) seen a massive fall in foreign tourism, and with travel corridor not allowing us to pop across to our favourite spots without a 14-day isolation, holidaying abroad is less convenient. The new trend seems to be staycations and with Brits realising how brilliant the UK is, going on holiday on home soil may become the new norm.

Northumberland
Northumberland, the most northern English county bordering Scotland. It’s home to lots of amazing spots to visit during your stay. Alnwick, synonymous with its castle famous for being the site of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films, also boasts stunning gardens, including a poison garden with some of the world’s most dangerous plants!
Another amazing castle in Northumberland is Bamburgh Castle, located right on the beachfront with a vast and interesting history- this is definitely one for your to do list.
Of course there is a large stretch of Hadrian’s wall through Northumberland National Park which is an amazing historical insight into the Roman rule of Britain. Along the wall are many Roman Forts and museums to visit and brush up on your British-Roman history. Dundee
Dundee, voted the coolest little city in Britain in 2015, and there is no doubt about it, Dundee is very cool indeed. By being home to the first Victoria & Albert Museum outside of London, in a stunning dockside building and a really exciting surge in modern Scottish cuisine it has certainly done that! The Beaches of North Yorkshire and East Riding.
Beaches? Yorkshire? Surely not! Well the often-forgotten range of beaches in East Riding and North Yorkshire are some amazing hidden gems in the North. From Kilnsea to Redcar there are so many beaches to visit on the north coast ready for visitors.
From the stunning views and landscape of Whitby (you might even get a chance at some vampire spotting), Staithes, and Robin Hoods Bay; to the family friendly spots in Filey, Bridlington, and Scarborough; and Puffin spotting in Flamborough.
Cardiff
Cardiff is such an exciting city, there is something for everyone to do. With the largest concentration of castles in any city in the world, there is plenty for history fans to explore and learn. The Norfolk Broads are just a place of calm and tranquillity. The Norfolk National Park is made up of over 125 miles of man-made waterways. On the shore you will find gorgeous scenery, quaint towns and villages. For a relaxing holiday, walking, cycling, sailing, whatever your choice of transport, the Broads are the place for a chill slow-paced staycation.
Pembrokeshire
Pembrokeshire is on the south coast of Wales, and it really sells itself. The 50 glorious beaches in the region, golden sands, bright blue seas and the stunning coastline is probably all you need to convince yourself to head down the Welsh coast. If you are looking for a beach getaway with all the water sports and ice cream you would want, then get yourself down to Pembrokeshire.
York
There is so much to do in York, it has a very colourful history. From being a Roman settlement to the Viking raids through to the Norman conquests, with all that history, there are some interesting places you should add to your to do list; explore and learn about Clifford’s Tower, the Jorvik Centre and the York Minster.
If history isn’t quite your thing then don’t worry, there is a chocolate museum showcasing York’s confectionery expertise and there are a wide variety of amazing pubs, restaurants, bars, tea rooms and some shopping on the Shambles to keep you entertained.
Glencoe, Glenshee, Ben Nevis, Cairngorm, and The Lecht
More of a winter sports holidayer? Well then fear not, because Scotland has FIVE ski resorts. That’s right, there’s 5 amazing ski resorts right on our doorstep here in the UK, meaning you could just pop to a ski resort for the weekend, no flights, and no heavy luggage charges for skis. Throughout the 5 resorts there is a varying degree of difficulty for all abilities from green to black as well as terrain parks for freestyle skiers. Ski season is normally in January and February giving you plenty of time to pop up for a few runs.
Bailiwick of Guernsey
The name used for the three crown dependencies of Guernsey, Alderney, and Sark located off the south coast of mainland Britain in the Channel just to the west of Normandy in France. Whilst you’re sort of going abroad you are still within the British Isles, so we think it still counts as a staycation! The three islands are absolutely gorgeous. With stunning scenery, golden beaches, and natural features, you won’t realise you’re not sunning it up somewhere exotic.
The Isle of Sark also has no motor vehicles (apart from tractors) and no street lights after dark so it is the most amazing place to get away from the bright lights and loud noises of town life, just relax and see the stars.
The Chilterns AONB
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It sure is! The Chilterns AONB to the northwest of London is just gorgeous. It is the ideal getaway to get yourself in touch with nature, perfect for long walks, bike rides and outside living. Walking through the forests and seeing the breath-taking natural views.

With Laura Crowther
In our last blog we spoke to our Business Development Manager Dan. We’re continuing the series talking to Laura, and finding out about her role as a Designer at Urban Illustration.
Hi Laura, tell us about your first few months at Urban Illustration, how has it been? It's been busy, to begin with I was working from home which was different but I am back in the office now and it’s good to be where I can work within the team rather than emailing all the time.
Explain your role at Urban Illustration. I am a designer for Urban Illustration so this is predominantly drawing up the buildings in the same style and working them into the city prints that we offer.
So far, what have you found the most exciting part about your role at Urban Illustration? And what are you looking forward to doing in the next year?
Seeing some of the quirky buildings in a new city. I’m looking forward to getting quicker with the design process and seeing the designs for more cities being printed.
What makes Urban Illustration products unique?
Each city print is designed in house; we do not use ‘stock’ buildings to fill gaps. Every building, park etc on a print can actually be seen in the city that the print is designed for.
What is your favourite product from the range?
The Nightingale washbag. It is ideal for the eco-friendly minded traveller.
Urban Illustration has so many colour schemes, which do you prefer? Chicory.
What are your favourite cities to visit? Manchester, Leeds, London, and Paris
If you were given £5 what would spend it on? I’d like to say a train ticket but probably just lunch.

What are your interests and hobbies outside of work? I’m also trained as a pattern cutter and costume designer, so I work with a theatre company to help out with their productions. Other than that, I have a few sewing projects on the go and decorating.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself. A few years ago, I worked on the costumes for Little Mix’s backing dancers and Lord of the dance.

Introducing: Sheffield
Sheffield, a little gem in the north.
Home to Henderson’s Relish, a historic steel industry and the oldest football team in the world. It is the backdrop of hit films like The Full Monty, This is England ’86, and How to talk to girls at parties. It is also home to some of the nicest people in the country (and Urban Illustration).
There are plenty of reasons to come and visit! And if you do, here is a list of things you could get up to. So, hop on the tram and we’ll take you on a little tour of Sheffield.
Sheffield Train Station
It’s likely that the train station will be your first stop in Sheffield. If you’re in need of refreshment the Sheffield Tap is a pub serving some of Sheffield’s finest beers and ales and is located on platform 1B or you can get to it from just outside the station. Once you leave the station you will be greeted by gorgeous water features and fountains which at night light up to give you a gorgeous welcome to the city.
Winter Gardens
Straight off the train and up the first hill of your trip you will find yourself at the Sheffield Winter Gardens, one of the UK’s largest glasshouses and home to over 2000 plants from around the globe. It is an amazing sight to see all of these amazing plants in the heart of a city centre. These winter gardens are attached to the Sheffield Millennium Gallery, a celebration of Sheffield steel, art, and ever-changing guest exhibitions.
Theatres
Leaving the Winter Gardens, you will be welcomed by Sheffield’s two largest theatres, The Crucible, and the Lyceum. Year round both theatres are home to wonderful shows, from local theatre companies, nationwide tours, pantomimes, ballets and more, so there is bound to be something to your liking during your trip to the city. The Crucible is also famously home to annual World Snooker Championship, so it’s worth the visit for all snooker fans, even if you can’t get tickets you can watch the action from huge screens showing the action in the square outside.
Peace Gardens
Right in the heart of the city overlooked by the town hall is the Peace Garden, the collection of hidden fountains, water features and lawns it is perfect peaceful place to sit and take the city in. In Spring the cherry blossom takes over the peace gardens.
Bessemer
By this point you may be feeling in need of a little refreshment and some sustenance. Just a short walk away from Peace Gardens you will arrive at the Bessemer pub. With a great atmosphere and amazing food that you can cover in Henderson’s Relish and some of Sheffield’s best beers, it’s a great pit stop on your Sheffield adventure.
Football Stadiums
Calling all football fans! Sheffield is home to two battling football teams, Sheffield United in the premier league and Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship. Their Sheffield derby rivalry is famous. The United stadium is on Bramall Lane in the city centre and Wednesday’s home is just up the road in Hillsborough. Both stadiums offer tours so you can get to see some behind the scenes action.
Kelham Island
Kelham Island was one of the oldest industrial sites in Sheffield, and Kelham Island industrial museum pays true homage to its steel manufacturing roots. However, now Kelham Island has revived to be a great leisure destination. Boasting some of Sheffield’s most well-known pubs like the Fat Cat and Kelham Tavern as well as a wide range of excellent restaurants, and amazing cafes. People from all over Sheffield flock to Kelham Island every weekend and it’s easy to see why.
Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens is a large park in the Broomhall area of Sheffield, with paths throughout and large areas of lawn it is designed for exploring and relaxing. Not to mention the amazing gardens it displays, for example, the Asian Garden, Rose Garden, Mediterranean Garden and Evolution Garden to name a few. There’s also the pavilion, housing tropical plants. The Botanical Gardens is definitely somewhere to add to your list if you’re a budding botanist.
The Arts Tower
The Arts Tower is a Sheffield University building that has become something of a tourist spot in Sheffield. It is the second tallest building in Sheffield and has received much praise for its design and construction. However, the main attraction is the Paternoster lift, which is an elevator that unlike most elevators continuously moves in a loop and passengers can step on and off freely. The Paternoster lift in the Arts Tower is the largest in the UK with 38 “cars”. It seems a little odd to recommend a stop off to ride in a lift, but it is really cool!

St Paul's Cathedral
St Paul’s Cathedral sits atop the Ludgate Hill at the highest point in London, so for the views alone it is worth the trip. The second largest church in the UK is an impressive building, both for it’s astounding English Baroque architecture and boasting one of the highest domes in the world. Having hosted many significant events such as Monarchy Jubilees, peace services following both world wars and Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding, it holds a wealth of history.
Borough Market
Feeling a little peckish? Then head to Borough Market. Home to freshly cooked street food and artisanal food producers offering everything from fresh breads, cheeses, preserves and drinks. It is a haven for amazing food, with street food chefs bringing tastes from all over the world and adding their own unique twists you can head down at any time of day for some of the most delicious and easy food in London.
Barbican centre
The Barbican is a world class arts centre, showcasing the best of dance, film, music, theatre and visual arts. With a fully stocked calendar of exhibitions, film viewings, talks, workshops and performances, there is sure to be something that will interest you during your trip to London. Tickets and the event calendar are available on their website.
Tate Britain
The Tate Britain is the oldest gallery within the Tate Network of galleries in England (including Modern, Liverpool and St Ives) and is one of the largest galleries in the country. The permanent collection is composed of British art dating from 1500 to present day and is the most thorough collection of British art in the world. It is an amazing way to truly celebrate the variety and changes of British art through the ages.
Baker Street/ SherlockHolmes Museum
Baker street itself is the home of fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, so if you’re a fan of the novels of the more recent TV adaptation it’s a great way to engross yourself in the story. And you will find the Sherlock Holmes Museum if you want to delve further into the world of Sherlock. It is also just around the corner from the very real wax museum Madame Tussauds. And at the end of Baker Street you will find the gorgeous Regents Park for a walk or a trip to the ZSL London Zoo.
Camden Lock
What can’t you do in Camden Lock? Home to a plethora of unique independent shops where you will be able to find a range of hidden gems. With food and drink offering plates and tastes from all over the world there will be something for everyone if you become a little peckish, and you’ll be sure to find a cocktail that will quench your thirst. Camden Lock is also home to a range of activities from mini golf, or boat ride, to the less PG Vagina Museum. Camden Lock is definitely a varied experience that will differ from your usual London day trip.
Harrods & Liberty London
If your trip to London needs a little retail therapy, then maybe consider a quick (or long) trip to Harrods or Liberty London. The department store to conquer all department stores, Harrods is the largest department store in Europe, occupying 5 acres (20,234.3m²). And Liberty is famous worldwide for their distinct fabric designs. In both places, you will feel like your entering a movie scene surrounded by immaculate displays and luxurious products. Even if you aren’t buying anything, Liberty London and Harrods are definitely something to experience. If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in London at Christmas, both Harrods and Liberty’s window displays are known for their magical ambience.
China Town
Next door neighbour to Soho, Chinatown is right in the heart of where it’s all going on in the West End. It contains Chinese restaurants, bakeries, supermarkets and other Chinese businesses. This ethnically rich area of London is the perfect way to experience something completely different to the rest of London and enjoy some traditional Chinese culture.
National Gallery
The National Gallery speaks for itself. Standing in Trafalgar square it is one of London’s iconic buildings and is home to over 2,300 pieces of art dating back to the 13th century. It is an art lovers dream and with free entry why wouldn’t you head on down for a bit of artistic indulgence
Natural History Museum
Home to everything natural. Plants, dinosaurs, animals, minerals and more. You name it, it’s there! Even if science isn’t your thing, the Natural History Museum is bound to have something that will really take your breath away. This could be the enormous animal skeleton they have in the central hall, or one of the fabulous exhibits (a personal favourite is the giant sloth). It is something not to be missed.

Today we’re talking to Dan, our Business Development Manager, and finding out all about him and his role at Urban Illustration.
Hi Dan, you started your role during the lockdown, what was it like starting your job working from home?
It has been strange however it has given me and the team plenty of time to ensure everything about the brand and range is perfected before we launch. Also, I do enjoy getting more time to spend with my dog at home.
Explain your role at Urban Illustration.
In my role as Business Development Manager, I will be the main point of contact for all the UK customers. I will be prospecting new customers and collaborating with them to create the best design and product range to suit their needs.
So far, what have you found the most exciting part about your role at Urban Illustration? And what are you looking forward to doing in the next year?
I’m very much looking forward to getting out on the road to spread the message about Urban Illustration. I love meeting people in their city and shop to ensure they are getting the correct products. I am also excited about showcasing the brand at trade shows (providing they are still happening!)
What makes Urban Illustration products unique? The Innovative designs and printing techniques allow the edge to edge printing. The fact that everything is manufactured and printed in the UK, our ethical credentials. I also think as a brand we have a strong infrastructure in place which guarantees customer flexibility in the design process.
What is your favourite product from the range?
I love the Attenborough Luxury Bag in 10oz canvas. The all-round gusset and strength of canvas makes it strong enough to carry loads of shopping
Urban Illustration has so many colour schemes, which do you prefer? I like the eye-catching bright colours of Burnet but I think the classic Poppy Seed colourway will be the most popular with our customers.
What are your favourite cities to visit?
Sitges, London, Sydney, and Berlin
How would others describe you in three words?
Beautiful, Gorgeous and Stunning – Joke! – Flamboyant, Funny and Tall!
What are your interests and hobbies outside of work? Going out dancing, long Sunday pub lunches, going climbing and watching shows at the theatre
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself. I played a drag queen in the new Everybody’s Talking About Jamie movie, which is being released in October.
